I have put a little over 5,000 miles on my first set of these tires. They are starting to show enough wear that I am looking to replace them. Almost all of these miles have been carrying fairly heavy touring loads.
My riding with these tires has probably been about 85% on paved roads, and 15% on dirt roads. They are a perfect tire for this. The smooth strip down the center of the tire gives very low rolling resistance on the paved roads, and they are wide enough to plow through soft sand and mud. (700 x 35)
I think I have had six or seven flats in the last 5,000 miles. These have all been from very sharp objects (pieces of wire and glass). I am still using the orignal set of tubes; as I have been able to patch all of these flats.
My original reason for getting these tires was the reflective sidewalls. I ride in the dark a lot, and I want to do everything possible to be seen and recognized as a bicycle. I have had several people comment on how striking the reflective sidewalls are.

20 years of Marathon: To celebrate its anniversary, Bohle has treated its legendary, long distance runner to a full makeover. Inside and out the fourth generation of the Marathon incorporates the very latest in tyre technology. The Marathon is Europes biggest selling tyre. And in the bicycle business it is one of only very few everyday tyres that is specifically asked for by name. "Such a firmly established, market top seller as the Marathon, needs to be updated and modernised from time to time in order to incorporate the latest trends in tyre technology", said Holger Jahn, joint managing director of Bohle. "20 years ago it was the first high-tech tyre developed for everyday cyclists - and hence a revolution. After many years of continual technical advancement this years bead-to-bead remake now reflects the highest achievable technical standards possible". Refreshed and technically revised, Bohles classic tyre is aimed at the whole European market. But in relation to German market conditions the tyre should be arriving at a difficult time, as the specialised trade is experiencing a general decline in the ready market for high-quality parts and tyres. Yet despite the poor economic climate many German bicycle dealers are experiencing at least stable and more often rising sales of Marathon, Marathon Plus and Marathon XR. Since the launch of the third generation Marathon in 1999, Bohle is now ready to offer the specialised trade a new version of its proven top product incorporati.
