Aervoe LED Road Flare Review

I have been watching the LED flare market for some time. Most of the products to date have either been essentially toys or have been professional grade, but overpriced. I recently purchased several Aervoe #1185 Road Flares and have been happily impressed. The units are rugged and the LED light output is quite impressive. That said, while they will work well at night or under low light conditions, don't expect them to be as visible as multi LED vehicle brake/turn signals are in full sunlight. Nonetheless, these are impressive little units. I appreciate the selectable flash patterns, though I would have skipped the 'all on - dim' and one of the two 'constant on' 2 LED or 4 LED patterns. The single flash pattern is also too much like a true strobe light - the 'on' time is so brief that depth perception to the light is difficult - the same issue which plagues actual strobe lamps. I would have made this pattern more like 1/2 second on, 1/2 second off. But these are relatively minor issues compared to the overall value of the product. Amazon doesn't list the non rechargable units, but a quick internet search will uncover the identical model with a CR 123 battery and no recharging accessories for about half the price (as well as numerous color options including IR!). For occasional use, the non rechargable unit might be a better option for some users. The magnet is very strong and should hold the unit to any steel surface without trouble. I haven't had achance to evaluate the charging accessories, but the ability to charge from 120 VAC, 12 VDC or a USB port is a great feature, though the '+ and -' markings on the unit and magnetic charging adapter could be more clearly marked - the adapter can be easily reversed. I also dissasembled the unit (must be the engineer in me) which was a snap and should make replacing the CR 123 battery in the non rechargable unit a painless affair - just watch reassembly to insure the cover aligns correctly with the switch, the springs on the mounting screws don't get lost, and that the waterproof gasket seats correctly. Overall, the unit is well made, feature rich and a good value.
