I am a daily bike commuter in Seattle and avid road rider. I cannot wear road cycling shoes on my commute or I will slip on the steep Seattle streets especially when it is wet. I need a shoe that works on pavement. However I also do a fair amount of recreational road riding. I regularly shoot out after work on Friday and want a performance shoe that can double as a commuter. Last, I need a shoe that can fit inside booties because it is always raining here. There are actually many types of shoes that will not fit inside booties or will tear them up.
There are three basic choices for me: a tennis style shoe with cleats such as the SH-MT33L, a running shoe such as the PI X-Alp, or a shoe with a road profile and rubber tread like this one. I have tried all of these:
Tennis style shoe: these shoes have rubber soles and often laces. You can't tell them apart from tennis shoes. They are great when you are off the bike and you can even wear them in the office. But, they are not stiff and performance is poor on the bike. You feel like you are losing lots of power transfer during the pedal stroke. And, they don't fit inside most rain booties which means they get wet in winter which lasts about 9 months here.
Running style MTB shoe: these shoes look more like cyclin shoes. They use velcro and buckles and have a stiffer sole. They are a bit better in the performance department. But, they are hard to fit into booties. With the PI XAlp in particular, the ratchet system tore my Endura booties right up after 4 months. I also had a problem with the buckle breaking and had to order a new one from PI.
MTB Shoe with Road profile: these shoes look more like road shoes but have rubber walking pads that make walking easier. Performance on the bike is far superior. They also fit into booties! You couldn't get away with wearing these as tennis shoes and clearly you're not going for a run in these, but you won't slip on the sidewalk.
Last, the price can't be beat with these shoes. I am very happy with performance and quality thus far.
Bottom line: if you are looking for a commuter shoe, don't need something you can wear to the gym or on a run, want some good performance on the bike, and don't want to pay a lot, this shoe is a great option. I am very happy with my pair which I have owned since September and have done a great job in the Seattle winter (without ruining my booties). The only time I ever put on my XAlps is when I am doing a bike/hike.
