(More customer reviews)First of, note that the person who gave this product only 1 star was simply upset for his own mistake (ordering the wrong part) and blaming Shimano! I flagged his review and hope it gets removed. Ignore him, he has "issues."
Other people who bought this part or the hanger type tended to give 4 stars.
Pros:
CHEAP! I paid about 12 bucks. How many of you need a $50 derailleur?
IT'S A SHIMANO -- very good reputation
(PRETTY) EASY INSTALLATION -- see below for more
SEEMS TO WORK WELL on a variety of bikes.
I installed it on my 18 year old Giant MTB, 7 speed, works like a charm and makes my bike look fresh. It's only been on for about 2 weeks and maybe 100km (60 miles) around town but generally works great. I don't plan on entering any road races or careening down mountains, but I do ride my bike daily pretty hard in an urban environment where I jump curbs, swerve away from old ladies stepping into the road and speed past mad taxis who ignore traffic signals.
**CONS**
Installation manual had lapses. Sometimes it offered great detail, so specific that you dare not stray from the instructions, but then would leave out important tips about what gear the selectors should be in etc. If it was always detailed or always vague it would have been easier to understand but it was the switching between the two that left me scratching my head sometimes and eventually politely ignoring it like an old relative giving traffic directions. Still you don't have to be a mechanical whiz to install this. If it's your first time, go for it, it's easier than you might think.
STILL CAN'T GET IT PERFECT -- after 2 weeks of riding and adjustment, can't get it right and skips gears under hard torque. This is bad when a bus is coming at you. Perhaps I'm like the 1-star guy and it's my fault.
NOT A FAULT PER SE BUT CAN'T GIVE IT 5 until it's been on longer. It might burst into flames like a sony laptop one day, who knows?
SUMMARY:
Excellent for refurbishing an older bike, might even be good for a new one but I just can't say about that. Hard to beat the price and value. I'm grateful to shimano for making products like this that are cheap but don't suck and can enable me to keep riding my beloved old MTB until the frame breaks one day of metal fatigue and I make it into a lamp if they allow that at nursing homes in the year 2050.
(make sure you know if you need bracket or non bracket type)
