First and for most, if you are looking at this product, it is pretty much the lowest Shimano group road bike combo/STi shifters you can get. With that said, the quality of the build is top notch. They feel very positive in your hands and when in use. They shift pretty crisply for this entry level type of equipment. I was also looking at the Tiagra level ones as well but realized they are virtually the same with exception to the actual lever which has the down shift actuator down along with the brake lever, and they maybe a smidge lighter. But even with those two aspects, they are not worth over twice the price over these STi shifters. Keep in mind, the 22/2300 series shimano stuff is pretty much the previous years Sora group. So, if you're like me and are upgrading from tube shifters and seperate brake levers, these are so worth it! Just keep in mind if you have anything less than an 8 spd freewheel/casset, these will not work. Also, your rear cogs need to be compatible with SIS indexing. Anyways, all in all, these were exactly what I was looking for and for less than a cool C-note shipped, I'm one happy roadie! Enjoy!
Update 9/17/2010
Had these STi shifters on for about a week. They've been awesome and well worth the money. I also upgraded to a 9 spd chain which is slightly thinner and shifts flawlessly and without rubbing like I had with my 7spd chain. I originally had a 7spd freewheel but upgraded to 8spd to be compatible with a combo lever like these. One thing I didn't know is that a 7spd and 8spd are indexed the same, just one more gear for the 8th cog. I've basically turned my $200 Schwinn Prelude into a bike with the quality of say a $600 or better entry road bike with just a few choice upgrades, like these. I've spent about $250 upgrading over time since I've had my bike. I will say this, if you buy a bike thinking you'll upgrade later, just spend the money in the beginning and get a quality bike. But, if you have an existing bike, this is a worthy upgrade to say the least. These have the quality and feel of much more expensive STi combo shifters. The only thing you really get by going up in the Shimano gruppo is mainly an extra gear and slightly lighter. Other than that, I didn't notice much with the tiagra shifters or even the Shimano triples. Hope this has helped. Happy roading.
