(More customer reviews)I was in need of a bicycle computer with these basic functions: Current speed, average speed, trip distance and total traveled distance (odometer).I went to my local bike shop and told the salesman what I needed. He, of course, tried to sell me the most expensive model with some functions that I didn't even know what they were for. In the end, after a hypnotic sale, I ended up convinced that I needed a wireless computer with not only the features mentioned above, but also one that measures altitude, temperature and heart rate.
I bought it, but I decided to make a little more research, returned the Sigma and I bought the Cateye Strada from Amazon.
At first I was surprised by how small it is (about 1.5" x 1.25"), but after installation, I think it's the right size. The installation was very simple, no tools required at all. The menu navigation is not intuitive, and required me to do something that I dread deeply: Read the manual! After all of three minutes reading it, I set the wheel size (following a chart provided in the manual) and I was ready to go.
This computer shows current speed (in mph or kph), average speed, maximum speed, trip time, trip distance, total traveled distance (odometer) and a clock.
Before my daily trip I reset all the values to zero by pressing on the face of the computer for two seconds (the odometer doesn't reset since it keeps the accumulative count of your trips) and I get the counts for my daily workout.
Also, one neat feature is that the odometer is programmable, so you can input your odometer reading when you have to change the battery.
So far, I'm very satisfied with this computer. Very precise, slick, and does a great job. Amazon did a good job with the delivery as well.

(More customer reviews)As I've read in other reviews, the Edge 705 base map is better than the 305 but no where close to what you would expect from an all-in GPS unit. If you want to obtain map detail on your PC and you GPS unit, don't buy the micro SD card but rather purchase the DVD version. I've confirmed from Garmin that if you purchase the DVD version, map detail can be viewed on your PC and the 705. All you need to do is copy the DVD to a micro sd card which you can insert into the unit.
As some of you may have found out, the micro sd card that comes with map detail can not be loaded on your PC which means you won't see the detail from your rides once you download them to the GTC software. Hope this saves some people money as well as miminizes the frustration.

Planet Bike Protege 9.0 9-Function Bike Computer with 4-Line Display and Temperature Review

(More customer reviews)There's a lot to like about this cycle computer. The "buttonless" design works well and allows a large display with most everything you'll need on one very readable page. I was especially pleased to find that, unlike my old CatEye, you can preset an odometer reading. I was also pleased to find that it has a 2 bike capability. You set wheel circumfrence and can preset an odometer readings for each. A single button on the back toggles between bikes. All that's needed is another wire/sensor harness which is relatively cheap. Modes are selected by pressing up on the entire computer and will show an odometer reading for the selected bike or an accumulated reading for both. The clock feature is also welcome.
The only negative is the temperature reading, which proved to be wildly inaccurate. I think sunshine causes a greeen-house effect inside the sealed unit. Whatever, it reads much higher than actual air temperature although tucked away in the garage the reading is reasonably accurate. Temperature reading wasn't a big issue with me anyway.
I couldn't be happier with it!

Basically Vetta doesn't deliver. I've purchased other wireless computers without cadence and they've included several options for mounting. This is where Vetta needs to step up. The cyclometer cannot be mounted to a stem. This is so basic, many people don't have room on the handle bars or in my case have aero handlebars that are shaped like an aerofoil, a time trial setup. I spent considerable time fabricating a mount for the aero bars and remotely locating the wireless pickup. After all was said and done the unit cuts out every now and then. Which renders your trip info useless. And when you start rolling it doesn't automatically switch from the clock setting to trip/speed information. So if you are more interested in owning an overpriced watch this is the unit for you. Oh I forgot to mention the cadence because it never works, you have to have the receiver so close it's ridiculous.
Vetta and other manufacturers need to rethink the cyclometer, why is it that a cell phone costs less than a cyclometer? Why is signal strength such a problem and why do we have use wires if we want cadence in the year 2008?

(More customer reviews)Of course, the low price of this gadget makes it attractive to an adventurer. But with that low price comes some definite pitfalls.
First the good: if you're looking for an inexpensive gps logger to keep track of where you have traveled, graced with accuracy and simple operation, this unit accomplishes these tasks. Battery life seems to be good and function selection is fairly intuitive. Just don't try to operate the unit while peddling in traffic or terrain---the instructions caution against this, and so do I.
Unfortunately, the software is clunky and does not deliver as promised. It's hard to install, not very user friendly and crashes occasionally. It will allow you to convert your recorded information to something useful by using one of a variety of (free) conversion and tracking programs.
More of the not so good: I don't know who programmed the conversion from kilometers to miles, but they missed...by quite a bit. As reported, the mph displayed is way off which makes the other data wrong, too. My solution---keep it on kph and do your own conversion (the kph scale appears to be accurate).
Not sure about the algorithm for trackback either. This function might work better on foot trails as opposed to urban bike environments.
So, would I buy it again? Probably, with the understanding that this is a device that you will have to play with to get the most out of it. It delivers multiple functions and accurate gps info at about the same price (on sale) as an ordinary bike computer, but you will need time and patience to make it work.

VDO MC1.0+ Wireless Altimeter/Cycle Computer Review

unfortunately the first unit had a bit of a problem.
The temperature reading was about 35 degrees higher than the actual temperature.
Let me say that Bikesomewhere really rocks they issued me an RMA and within the week I had my new unit. Thanks again for making the online buying experience very pleasant.
The setup was fairly straight forward on the computer. The install guide is all done with pictures so it's easy to follow. I will say that they need to state which is up and which is down on the sending unit that you attach to your fork. The picture stinks and if you place it upside down the computer has a hard time detecting the signal.
The initial setup of the computer is fairly straight forward once you realize there is a 3rd button on the rubber piece that says MC1.0+
My only complaint and it's a minor one is that setting the base elevation took forever. The digits move at only 10ft at a time. My elevation here in Colorado is 6800ft so it took a long time for the computer to get up to that value.
Once I got thru the defective unit, the physical installation and the calibration it was time to take a ride and see how well it all worked.
The trip distance time all worked as any normal bicycle computer. The temperature reading is nice to have.
The altimeter the real selling point on this device is very cool. I took it out on a familiar trail and it is very easy to read. there is a readout of %grade that changes as you climb it also records your steepest climb as well as your average climb grade. This all works great.
The computer also keeps a record of how many feet you have climbed for the trip and over all.
The computer recorded that I climbed 1500 feet for my ride and looking at some of the information I have on the trail this is very close to being the actual elevation gain.
So this product seems to work as advertised. I hope that the initial quality holds up to the test of time. I will try and update this review in a years time so you can see how it's holding up.
Just a quick update on this product. I've had it for about 18 months and it has worked flawlessly. It has been nice seeing my elevation gains and incline grade. I have had to replace the batteries in the unit but other than it has been free from any kind of problems.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for altimeter features in a bike computer.
One nit picky thing is that the elevation that you are at is very large in the display taking up a lot of real estate, they should make that smaller IMHO. Its not all that important to know what your elevation currently is. I'm more intrested in how much I've climbed or what the grade is than knowing that.

SIGMA BC1706HR DTS Wireless Bicycle Speedometer with Heart Rate Monitor Review

(More customer reviews)This is my 4th bike computer over the years. The dual bike functionality is brilliant. The addition of pulse monitoring is awesome. The layout of stats is excellent -- I especially like the fact that half are triggered by one button, and half by another. That means that rather than stepping through all 20 (or so), you can access a given stat in 1/2 of the number of button presses.
The only issue is that on my trail bike with the giant, shock-forks there is a lot of metal between the wheel sensor transmitter and the receiver on the handlebars. I do lose the signal on occasion. I suspect that if I spend the time to move the receiver and transmitter around, I can improve reliability. As pointed out by others, the manual sucks. I'm not particularly pleased that all parts are held on by rubber o-rings -- not sure what UV and weather will do to those over time. The o-rings are certainly more adaptive to different diameter mounting situations, but I would much rather screw them down with clamps. Would love a temperature function, but suspect that it is not possible since device is always in direct sunlight.
Negatives aside, bottom-line is this is the best bike comp I've ever owned and would buy again/recommend to friends.

Schwinn 17-Function Bike Computer Review

Because there is no other bike computer that boasts a name brand company, has as many features, and costs as little as this one! I made sure to read all the reviews on Amazon before I purchased this, and I find it disheartening that I was almost swayed to *not* buy it. Fortunately, I read between the lines of all the negative comments and figured their age and/or grammar explained why they had difficulties with the device.
To start, almost everyone is correct in stating it's difficult to install; honestly, it is! The instructions suggest a 1mm distance between the magnet and the sensor, which basically means: as close as you can get it without the two pieces hitting! To achieve this, the task takes a considerable amount of fiddling, but once you find the right spot on the fork and spoke to where they come closest without hitting, you're golden. I spent about 10 minutes doing this. After the magnet and sensor were on, the setup of the computer was a breeze. It asked for wheel diameter (which is required if you want accurate readings of speed, distance, etc), age, weight, time settings, etc. If you read the instructions, it will explain how to set each of these values.
I want to address a few of the complaints on this page. The first was from a young man who said he was riding 60 mph. Your problem: you didn't set the correct wheel diameter! The instructions provide you a handy chart to tell you what code to type in based on the corresponding diameter. Now, if you don't know what a diameter is, or don't have the intelligence to look it up online, you probably shouldn't be using this computer in the first place. If your wheel is 26" and you set it to 15", yes, you will not have the correct and accurate display of your speed!
I read another review that said he couldn't figure out what buttons to push. Answer: READ THE DIRECTIONS! The directions tell you what to push, for how long, and when. They do this for all displays and all features. If you can't figure that out, I don't know what else to tell you. Honestly, there are 2 buttons, are you that stupid?
I read another review that said distance traveled couldn't be reset, nor could the calories or fat burned. WRONG! Yet again, people fail to actually *read* the instructions, and have the nerve to come online and submit a negative review. There are 7 displays that are shuffled with the *right* button. The *odometer* display does not reset, because it's just that, an odometer. Do you reset your car odometer, too? What you're looking for is the *tripmeter* display. The tripmeter can be reset by holding the *left* button for 2 to 3 seconds. When you reset the tripmeter, you also reset the trip timer, and the average speed value which was set during your previous trip. To reset the calories burned or fat burned, go to that feature display, and hold the left button for 2 to 3 seconds. Simple enough?
In summary: this computer is accurate in all its features if you read the instructions and input the correct wheel diameter. Speed, distance traveled, average speed, trip timer, temperature, and everything else, I have found to be 100% accurate. I checked the speeds against a driver and the temperature against a 3rd party thermostat. Since I've only used this product for a couple weeks, I can't tell you how durable or what's its longevity will be, but if the features and accuracy mean anything, I should be using this computer for a long time.
Quick note to everyone who set this thing up wrong and feels foolish for complaining: if you input the wrong diameter, press both buttons down at the same time for 3 seconds and it will reset the whole device so you can input data from scratch. If your speedometer is reading out "0.0" while you ride, you have the sensor and magnet setup wrong. Try to align the magnet with the arrow next to the "Sensor" text.
The key to having a pleasurable experience with this bike computer is to read the instructions. If you don't feel like reading instructions, don't buy this. If you feel you can bare with the idea of reading a bit and want a great piece of hardware at the lowest price on the market, BUY this device.

Cateye CC-AT200W Adventure Wireless Bicycle Computer Review

(More customer reviews)I bought the Cateye CC-AT200W Adventure Wireless Bicycle Computer last month to put on my new touring bike. I've used it for about 200 miles so far and have been pleased with it.
The main reason for getting this unit was I wanted altitude gain as well as the usual speed, distance, maximum speed, and average speed. This unit does not measure cadence and I really had no interest in it, so if that's something important to you, you should look elsewhere. During a two-day ride on the Great Allegheny Passage, the altitude gain measured just under 3,000 feet which was well within 100 feet of the published value, so I was quite pleased with that. I also very much like the automatically measured riding time (a manual mode is also available) which starts and stops within a second or two.
The reason I didn't rate this unit 5 stars is that the initial setup is not totally straightforward as the directions are quite condensed. It took me several tries before I got the hang of the terminology and the logic. Additionally, the buttons on the back are quite small and I ended up using a pencil eraser to push them instead of fingers, especially when I needed to push two at once. Now that I've been using it a bit, it's actually quite easy to use on an everyday basis, but I can see some people getting a little frustrated initially until they get the hang of it. More clearly written directions would eliminate most problems in my opinion. Note that directions are given in many languages, so they'll be one for you no matter where you live.
Overall, I am pleased with the unit and would get it again. It provides the data I'm looking for and the wireless attachment to the bike is a breeze and quite secure. Given I've used a lower-end Cateye unit on my old bike for five years without any problem, I fully expect this unit to provide good service for years to come.

Sigma ROX 9.0 Triple Wireless Computer Review

(More customer reviews)I have been using this computer for more than 3 months now and here are my observations.
PROS:
1) Overall a good value for the price paid , I think the combination of wireles monitoring of cadence,speed, HR and logging memory is unique in this price range. However, if you want a GPS capable computer then look elsewhere.
2) I like the customized view display and its layout, which is easy to read even during bumpy rides on unpaved roads.
2)The size of the computer is appropriate for its functionality and it is definitely smaller than corresponding Garmin 305 model.
3) I also like the fact that sensor batteries are standard types and can be changed by myself.
4) Accuracy of the computer is reasonable, I did not find more than 2% difference comparing the distance and elevation profiles registered by ROX with topological maps.
CONS:
1) I really don not understand why cadence is not part of logging memory. According to me, this is one of th top 3 parameters you want to monitor during a ride, together with speed and HR. It is quite ridiculous that Sigma is capable logging the air temperature but not the cadence. Was this designed for cyclists or meteorologists?
2) The sensor attachments are rather clumsy , which has been typical even for older Sigma models. Using o-ring combination with double-sticky foams is a cheap solution in this price range. Need to be frequently adjusted especially if you transport your bike in a car and take the bike wheels off.
3) This computer can be used only when attached to the bike base. Once you use it standalone, no HR can be recorded (elevation is the only variable monitored continuosly ) which makes it not usable for runners.
4) The elevation sensor is OK but since it is based on the air pressure (no GPS data calibration) it makes it very sensitive to the atmospheric pressure variation. I noticed that the elevation of my house registered by the computer varied by more than 20 m (60 ft) in a period of ~2 hours. So calibration before each ride is a must.
5) The uphill/donwhill grade measumeremnts are significantly time lagging and they show right values only if you remain at same slope at least for 15-20 s. It means that if you ride in a terrain with lots of short uphills and downhills, the computer will show +6% climb only after you passed the peak of the climb and are already on the downhill section.
Bottom line: It is a good cyclocomputer that reports all relevant variable that most people will need during rides. I find it usefull for improving my ride in terms of adjusting cadence and gear ratio to achieve optimum HR rate range and ability to log and compare my performance stats during short cycling season here in New England.

Backlight does not stay on long enough and can't be reconfigured.
Must be turned on at start of ride and after stopping for several minutes. Is frustrating to look down and see zero MPH because you forgot to hit a button to make it wake.
Heart rate pick up isn't perfect. This is my second HRM and it is only slightly better than last which is well over 5 years old.
Claims to support two bikes, but extra speed/cadence sensor is eighty five overpriced dollars

They are easy to install (in about 5 minutes) They pop into your bar ends and have a round socket that lets them swivel in any direction. Unless you have really wide thighs, they show the whole road to left or right depending on which side they are on. I wouldn't change them for anything else. Once they are on your bike, they become like an integral part of it, not something sticking out or getting in the way.

Update - After numerous emails with the mfg'r and the total lack of function of the unit, they finally agreed to replace the unit. Waiting for their response with a non functional unit and about to go on a trip, I bought a Cateye with cadence and it works fine. So much for Vetta. Now let's see if I can get my money back.

Cateye CC-RD300W Strada Wireless Bicycle Computer Review

(More customer reviews)I've ridden close to 400 miles since I purchased this Cateye cycle computer and been quite pleased with it, but I didn't want to submit a review until I had a chance to measure the computer's accuracy. On my previous bike, I used a Trek cycle computer (wired). The distance measurement the two computers gave for my home to office commute were slightly off. I didn't know which one to believe. So the other day I rode along the Mt. Vernon trail, and when I passed mile marker 17, I checked the Cateye's odometer. When I passed mile marker 18, the odometer was accurate to the hundredth decimal place. I was very impressed.
Raves:
- Accuracy
- Size, style and installation (looks great mounted to the stem)
- ClickTec ease of use (with the Trek I had to fumble with buttons along the top and bottom)
- No ugly wires
Rants:
- Requires 2 batteries
- One time I hit a big bump and the angle of the wheel sensor changed enough so that the magnet and it began to hit each other
2/2/08 UPDATE: The tab on the bracket broke off when I popped the Strada out. I blame the winter cold stressing the plastic. I reported the breakage to Cateye, and then sent me a full parts kit (for mounting a sensor and bracket on a second bike) free of charge. Excellent customer service.

VDO MC1.0 Altimeter/Cycle Computer Review

I bought this computer because I wanted an altimeter, so this review will focus on the alt functions. I researched other altimeter bike computers and found others either had suspect reliability or were inaccurate. Having only read good things about the VDO, I took the plunge.
I decided not to get the wireless version because simpler is better in my opinion.
My first ride with the VDO was 235 km through everything from hard rain to hot sunshine. The VDO worked fine in all those condition. I avoided pushing the buttons during the hard rain because I didn't want to risk getting water into it on my first ride. Plus my attention was elsewhere during the thunderstorms. But like I said, the VDO worked fine under some rather harsh condition.
The display has a lot of info on one screen. Maybe too much info because the screen is a bit crowded and some info is displayed in rather small characters. I'd like to see less info per screen and bigger characters. The % grade readout is particularly small. However, I was able to read all the displays under all the conditions.
The altimeter seems to work very well. I paid particular attention to the % grade display and I never saw it give me unreasonable info, such as negative grade when I was going uphill. I was surprised at the sensitivity of the % grade display. When going up a slight uphill, for example, the display might read 1%. Then say the grade increased a bit and sure enough, the display changes to 2%. I am surprised that the VDO can calculate such slight grades just from the change in air pressure. Remember, a 1% grade is only 1 meter over 100 meters. Nevertheless, it seems to work. The alt gets updated about every 10 seconds and it does have a fair amount of smoothing built in. So if you start going down a 6% grade the display will not jump from 0% to 6%, but rather it will count up from 0% to 6% at an increasing rate. All in all, it seems to work quite well.
Since I just got this computer, I can't comment on its long term reliability. It does have a 5 year warranty, but it appears the only service center is in Germany. Due to this and the other nits I've pointed out, I'd probably give the VDO 4.5 stars if I could. Still, I'm happy with my purchase and I would recommend this computer for someone looking for an altimeter.
The seller shipped on the same day I ordered via Priority Mail so I got the package in a couple of days. Good work!
UPDATE ON 3 SEPTEMBER, 2006:
I've used this computer for a couple of thousand kilometers now, and through a lot more rain, so it's time for a review update.
The computer seems to be holding up just fine. In fact, I'm still using the original battery. The VDO has been through several days of rain and there is no hint of water getting into it.
The clock seems to keep pretty good time. Over the course of a year it was only off a couple of minutes.
I have a friend who owns one of these, and he has at times seen some strange alt data. For example, he says he has seen max grade readouts of 48%. (I didn't know the VDO would register such grades!) He attributes such anomalies to rapid temp changes, such as when you take the computer from an air conditioned room to your bike parked on the street on a hot summer day and immediately start riding. That makes sense, since the alt calculation is dependent on the temp. I have never seen any such strange data on my computer, but I usually leave my computer on the bike.
I don't want to get into an argument with one of the other reviewers, but this computer DOES accurately measure inclines. It calculates inclines by measuring the alt change divided by the distance traveled. So you have to be moving to get a change in the % grade readout. The fact that the grade does not change when you tilt the unit means nothing. The VDO does not calculate instantaneous inclines, but it does measure average inclines.
In conclusion, I'd still give the VDO 5 stars. In fact, I like it so much I bought another one.

Sigma BC1609 Cycling Computer, front wheel sensor Review

(More customer reviews)This is the first bike computer I've ever owned, and I think it's just perfect!
I'm over 50 and use readers for almost everything, so I bought the Sigma 1609 because it has large numbers. I can read everything on the screen, no problem! It's a wired device, and was very easy to install in about 15 minutes. It worked the first time without any adjustments. The spoke magnet needs to be closer than 5mm to the sensor that is mounted to the fork. Just use a 6mm open end wrench to make a visual check on the distance.
The computer is easy to set-up. Easy to use and easy to remove from holder when you jump off your bike for a few minutes. I think everyone would be happy with this bike computer.

Sigma Sport Sigma BC2209 STS MHR Triple Wireless Computer Review

1. I'm not fond of the sensor magnets, both on the speed sensor and the cadence sensor. The speed sensor on the wheel is a bit too bulky, it didn't slip past the flange on the sensor, I had to place it on a far spoke rather than a near one. The Cadence magnet is a kludgy solution, adhesive and a zip tie, a more refined solution would be preferred.
2. Pretty easy to set up, no complaints there. Rubber bands attachments are good and bad, fine for road bikes, not really useful for mountain bikes- use zip ties instead.
3. The ROX STS sensors work with this unit.
4. The ROX handle bar mount and USB docking station are NOT compatible with the Topline series, they use a different number of pins 4 vs 2.
5. The ROX models can record data from several rides, the BC-2209 can only store 1.
6. The proper USB docking station for the BC-2209 won't be out until the Data Center 2.0 software is ready, in April 2010. (I talked to the customer service people to learn this.) Data Center 2.0 will be Mac OS X compatible! (That made the sale for me!)
7. It's waterproof/resistant, at least the rain I got caught in the other night didn't kill it. I'm guessing you're not going to be biking in a scuba suit, so it's waterproof enough.
8. The buttons are on the top and bottom of the unit, and it tends to move if the handle bar mount is attached with the rubber bands, there is an adhesive to stop this, but I'm not convinced the adhesive will hold over the long term, I like a bolt on solution that can really be cranked down tight.
Ok, that's all for now, even with these annoyances I like the unit a lot, it keeps accurate speeds and doesn't seem to lose connection with the sensors, a huge problem for my old Polar S720i.
