(More customer reviews)Recently decided to replace my old Rhode Gear rack (clasps were rusted). Tried the Saris Bones 3 - horrible. Returned it to the store the next day. Very difficult to get the bikes on and off. Now purchased the Thule 962XT from Eastern Mountain Sports ($104 on a 20% discount special). This is a beautiful piece of equipment. Well made, solid, easy to set up and holds three bikes very securely. The no-sway mechanism works well (this seems to be the primary upgrade from the earlier 962 version which now retails for about $105 without discount) and keeps the bikes at a slight angle away from the car. The bikes sit very firmly in place. Still need to secure the front wheels of the bikes with the supplied cynch cord (I prefer to use long pieces of velcro). Great product. A definite buy.

Thule 910XT Passage 2 Bike Trunk Mount Carrier Review

(More customer reviews)Well-built rack that fits well on my car (although not using the setting that the manual suggested). I used this to transport my Cannondale road bike across the country. Unfortunately, the plastic piece that straps onto the downtube to keep the bike from swaying put some serious scratches in my bike's paint, wearing it all the way to the shiny aluminum below. Pretty disappointing. If you use this rack, I suggest putting a small towel, like a washcloth, between the downtube and the stabilizer piece.

Hollywood Racks E3 Express 3-Bike Trunk Mount Rack Review

(More customer reviews)I too did my homework as for reviews comparing this bicycle rack with others offered on Amazon. I chose this one partially because of the reviews plus it was available directly through Amazon and the price was reasonable. I found that this rack was extremely well made and easy to attach to my 1996 Honda Accord. I could also tell that it would be able to fit many cars because of the way it was designed. I also liked this one because of the fact it has two additional hold down straps which attach to the sides of the rear trunk. There is a weak link in this product though. It is the quality of the tightening fasteners on the hold down straps. I loaded up three 26" bikes on the rack, which was a bit of a challenge, but did work well once you get the hang of it. I re-tightened all the straps as instructed in the directions before driving off and felt confident I did a good job. My vacation trip was only 150 miles away and I just happened to stop after about 50 miles to check how the bikes were doing. I found that the straps had loosened up and the rack was not secure. I tightened the straps up again and rechecked in another 50 miles to find the same result. If I hadn't stopped from time to time to check, I wonder what the result would have been. So, because the rack is built so well and is easy enough to use, I gave it three stars rather than less because I feel this rack would work great for short trips. However for longer trips, I definitely would not recommend this rack. It's really a shame they didn't come up with a more efficient strap fastener. I am returning this rack today and will try another brand with a close eye on the type of strap fastener used. Advice to you....no matter what brand you purchase, for long trips be sure to double check how secure your rack is from time to time....Hope this helps.

Allen Deluxe 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack Review

(More customer reviews)I've been pretty nervous looking for a decent but affordable bike rack. After initially getting an Outback Rack from Target, I was disappointed by the flimsy construction and had to return it. I did some more researching and wasn't able to find any reviews for low-mid-priced racks online. Found a Bell 3-bike rack from Walmart and later on a Bell 2-bike rack from Sports Authority. These were a lot sturdier but also quite heavy.
I have a mountain bike that weighs about 35lbs. A friend of mine has a road bike that weighs about 25lbs. I kept looking and finally settled on the Allen because of the price, design and construction.
(I took a star off for aesthetics. The foam supports are grey. The top and bottom struts are unpainted silver aluminum, and the caps at the end of the rack are white.)
A couple of things I learned:
* cloth/nylon strap tie downs are better than plastic or rubber which become brittle after repeated use and exposure to different weather conditions
* use of lighter weight aluminum is better than steel
* the more anchor points to your car the better (3 is the minimum)
* put the heavier bike on the slot closer to the car
* women's bikes or bikes without a horizontal beam from the seat to the handlebar column will require a "bike adaptor"
* when not in use, remove the rack from the car to prevent it from being stolen or the foam padding from melting onto your car
* lock your bike(s) to the rack with a separate chain
* use common sense and don't put more than the number of bikes the rack was designed for
* drive more slowly and carefully on uneven streets

Schwinn Outback 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this bike rack because I was moving out of state and didn't have enough room in the back of my car for the bike.
I also needed a rack to transport my bike to local trails, parks, etc. So, I went with Schwinn given the brand name and that it was relatively inexpensive.
I drove from NC to Fla, approx 700 miles, bad idea with this rack. I didn't have any trouble assembling the rack, only took about 5 minutes and was ready to go. However, during my trip, I had to pull over on the side of the interstate no less than 5 times to tighten the straps back. The buckles do NOT hold the straps in place. This is a real problem if you are travelling on a highway (or any busy road) and you have to worry about your bike flying off the back into oncoming traffic. Also, even if the buckles hold, The wind drag from the bike starts to pull the brackets right off of the rack frame. I had to purchase 4 bungee cords and rope in order to secure my bike from flying off the back (and yes, the rack was assembled correctly). Bottom line, this rack is probably a great value if don't plan on driving more than a a few miles or over 40-50mph, otherwise, it is a a complete waste.
