Thule 910XT Passage 2 Bike Trunk Mount Carrier Review

Thule 910XT Passage 2 Bike Trunk Mount Carrier

Well-built rack that fits well on my car (although not using the setting that the manual suggested). I used this to transport my Cannondale road bike across the country. Unfortunately, the plastic piece that straps onto the downtube to keep the bike from swaying put some serious scratches in my bike's paint, wearing it all the way to the shiny aluminum below. Pretty disappointing. If you use this rack, I suggest putting a small towel, like a washcloth, between the downtube and the stabilizer piece.

Convenient and easy to mount, the Thule 910 Passage strap rack lets you carry up to two bikes on the trunk of your car, making it easy to bring your bikes to the campsite or trail. The 910 Passage is equipped with a six-strap system that attaches securely to the rear of your vehicle, with vinyl-coated buckles that hold firm to the trunk while protecting your finish from scratches or dents. The carrier also includes a patented FitDial system that adjusts to a variety of car types, along with soft rubber cradles that protect your bike frames while holding them securely. And thanks to the narrow build, the carrier holds a wide range of bike types, including small child-size frames. Other features include SoftCushion pads on the frame itself, no-sway cages that prevent bike-to-bike contact, and a folding design for easy storage.

Allen Deluxe 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack Review

Allen Deluxe 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been pretty nervous looking for a decent but affordable bike rack. After initially getting an Outback Rack from Target, I was disappointed by the flimsy construction and had to return it. I did some more researching and wasn't able to find any reviews for low-mid-priced racks online. Found a Bell 3-bike rack from Walmart and later on a Bell 2-bike rack from Sports Authority. These were a lot sturdier but also quite heavy.
I have a mountain bike that weighs about 35lbs. A friend of mine has a road bike that weighs about 25lbs. I kept looking and finally settled on the Allen because of the price, design and construction.
(I took a star off for aesthetics. The foam supports are grey. The top and bottom struts are unpainted silver aluminum, and the caps at the end of the rack are white.)
A couple of things I learned:
* cloth/nylon strap tie downs are better than plastic or rubber which become brittle after repeated use and exposure to different weather conditions
* use of lighter weight aluminum is better than steel
* the more anchor points to your car the better (3 is the minimum)
* put the heavier bike on the slot closer to the car
* women's bikes or bikes without a horizontal beam from the seat to the handlebar column will require a "bike adaptor"
* when not in use, remove the rack from the car to prevent it from being stolen or the foam padding from melting onto your car
* lock your bike(s) to the rack with a separate chain
* use common sense and don't put more than the number of bikes the rack was designed for
* drive more slowly and carefully on uneven streets
Hope this review helped! :)

About Allen About Allen Bike Racks In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.
Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts, garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns more than three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.

Saris Bones 805 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack Review

Saris Bones 805 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Saris Bones 805 2-bike trunk mount rack stylishly mounts on a cars trunk, securely holding two bikes. Made of curved adjustable plastic arms and legs, this rack will mount over most spoilers and holds each bike at slightly different levels. When not in use, the rack will fold up into a compact block.
To secure the rack to the auto's trunk, position the arms and legs, and place the largest clip hooked around the top of the trunk. The medium sized clips hook along the sides and the smallest clips hook on the bottom of the trunk. Once in place tighten the straps to secure.
Now the rack is ready for the bikes. Each bike is secured to the rack with three quick fasten ratcheting straps. One strap wraps around the seat tube while the other two secure the top tube. The next bike goes on in the opposite direction with the same fastening straps in reverse. Women's bikes may require a crossbar adapter for proper fastening.
This sturdy bike rack is easy to use, stylish, and functional. Saris is so confident in the quality of this system, that they provide a lifetime warranty.
PROS:
Simple to install and remove
Designed for all weather use
Lifetime warranty
CONS:
Front tire is permitted limited movement
Does not secure to the auto in a way that can deter theft

Schwinn Outback 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack Review

Schwinn Outback 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this bike rack because I was moving out of state and didn't have enough room in the back of my car for the bike.
I also needed a rack to transport my bike to local trails, parks, etc. So, I went with Schwinn given the brand name and that it was relatively inexpensive.
I drove from NC to Fla, approx 700 miles, bad idea with this rack. I didn't have any trouble assembling the rack, only took about 5 minutes and was ready to go. However, during my trip, I had to pull over on the side of the interstate no less than 5 times to tighten the straps back. The buckles do NOT hold the straps in place. This is a real problem if you are travelling on a highway (or any busy road) and you have to worry about your bike flying off the back into oncoming traffic. Also, even if the buckles hold, The wind drag from the bike starts to pull the brackets right off of the rack frame. I had to purchase 4 bungee cords and rope in order to secure my bike from flying off the back (and yes, the rack was assembled correctly). Bottom line, this rack is probably a great value if don't plan on driving more than a a few miles or over 40-50mph, otherwise, it is a a complete waste.
