You need these to convert from downtube shifters to something more modern. I never felt safe reaching down all the time to shift. When coming to a stop i'd often avoid downshifting to a low gear because of this, thus having to be in a high gear out of a stop. Used only one on my 1994 TREK 1220 road bike, for the 7 speed rear. Put a trigger shifter "Shimano STX/Alivio Rapidfire Plus 7-Speed Shifter" on the 7/8"(22.2mm) quill portion of my stem, the shifters mounting bracket can be losened and swiveled to work this way. I left the front chainring as friction shift as the 3 speed indexed trigger shifter didn't seem to match up well enough not to be problematic. I hardly shift out of the middle chainring anyhow. Both of these cable stops have adjustments for cable tension. Highly recomend this product.
