(More customer reviews)Everybody who modernizes a vintage steel bike knows this problem: a modern replacement for the typical Weinmann long-reach brakes is hard to find. These Tektros were a perfect fit for me and I just ordered another pair for my other bike. Be aware though that you may run into problems installing them, because they are "recessed", not nutted. The solution to that problem might vary.... I had to drill out the fork a little.
German customs made them a bit expensive though...

(More customer reviews)I am 65 years old and have an old Motobecane Gran Jubile, cira 1972, which I rode in the Fletcher Flyer Century ride year before last, and several since. It's a Rynolds 531 alloy, has a Brooks Pro Saddle with 27" rims, Campy wide flange hubs and Bontranger Hard Case tires. Although it's much heavier, it rides a lot softer than my new full carbon Gary Fisher Cronus. Nice on short and/or not too arobic rides. Problem was the original Grand Comp brakes that, besides not stopping very well (I'm 6' 4" and 200#) were wired backwards from my other 2 bicycles, ie; right lever worked front brake. My bicycle shop recently installed the tektro 556 brakes and levers and I could not be happier with their performance. They stop on a dime and also have an additional release on the lever for ease of dropping the front wheel. This is an important feature if you have rims wider than the standard 23m. Mine were one and 1/4 inch, which is about 32m. They were a bargin for $155 installed.

Tektro R536 Caliper - Front, Standard Nut Review

(More customer reviews)These work well as an upgrade to an older bike; I bought them for a 27 year old Trek 500 which was originally equipped with single pivot Dia Compe calipers. The reach is appropriate for a 27" to 700C conversion such as mine, and the standard nut is important (the recessed bolts of newer calipers won't do without modifications to the frame.) a nice feature is that the calipers are angled slightly, which helps in front where sometimes it's hard to find pads that fit the narrow older front forks.
