(More customer reviews)The basic concept of this fender is simple and straightforward: right out of the package, it will easily attach to any seat pole without the use of tools for quick and easy installation. It uses friction applied by a leather-lined strip of nylon webbing (much like a seatbelt) tightened against the seat pole.
The failure is in the tightening mechanism. The webbing needs to be fed into the turn post, which you then tighten by hand before locking into place. The final tension comes from a latch attached to the end of the webbing; close that latch and the fender is supposed to hold. Except that each and every time I (and all my compatriots) tried, the turn post could not hold the webbing. Not enough friction there!
And that's if you can get the webbing properly threaded through! I managed that feat about 1 every 8 or 9 attempts. Those with nimbler fingers than I managed it a bit more often than I, but the results were always the same; attach to the seat post, close the latch for final tension, shake the bike to test and down went the fender.
Every. Blessed. Time.
And I might not have been as livid as I was if I had tested the tension properly first before I left my house with the thing on. I got about a block away before I felt and heard the fender collapse onto my rear tire while I was accelerating. No one wants to find a problem with their latest purchase while gaining speed on the road, let me tell you.
The salt in the wound on this poorly designed contraption is; while it's designed to attach to your bike without tools you still need an Allen wrench to tighten the screw that maintains the fender's angle. Which means you need a tool.
I'm returning this thing as fast as I can and I will be buying a fender that attaches with a nut/screw set.

Planet Bike SpeedEZ Road Front and Rear Bicycle Fender Set Review

(More customer reviews)Not having eyelets on my bike wasn't something I thought about until now--two years into owning it--but when I started looking for fenders I was a little shocked. From some of the product descriptions it can be hard to tell whether you need eyelets to install the fenders, but these are definitely designed for eyelet-less cycles. They also match with the attitude of most non-eyelet bikes (go speed racer!): these fenders are extremely light weight. The plastic is solid and durable, and there is farily good wheel coverage (I haven't seen the stripe of doom since I started using them). For the most part the rubberized strap installation system keeps the fenders in place (especially if you really yank on the straps), and the height of the fender is easy to adjust with a pair of locking pliers or a wrench. One downside of the light weight of the fenders is that sometimes a harsh bump or pothole will skew the fender alignment, but I haven't had a bad enough shake to ruin the coverage. Another small negative is that the required tension applied to the struts by the rubberized straps can be strong enough to pull the struts out of alignment, but that is easy enough to fix. One final small minus is that you don't get any extra straps; this is potentially bad because during the installation you have to trim the straps so they don't get caught in the spokes while riding. So if one of the straps snaps or otherwise breaks you'll be up a creek without a paddle. All in all, I highly recommend these fenders for bikes without eyelets. They are extremely light weight, durable, and easy to deal with. The price I paid (about $20) was cheap in my opinion. Get yo'self some and ditch the Butt Stripe of Doom.

Planet Bike SpeedEZ ATB Front and Rear Bicycle Fender Set (60mm Wide) Review

(More customer reviews)I have an old rigid frame/fork ATB and originally bought for it the 'Planet Bike Hardcore ATB Fenders'--the ones that attach via screws into eyelets on your frame. They fit perfectly and solidly. However the rear fender interfered with my rear rack's mounting; both preferred the same eyelets and I would've had to bend the stays on the fender to get them to coexist. So I reluctantly returned that set for this SpeedEZ fender set with the eyelet-less attachment mechanism.
Now the rear fender fits nicely underneath my rack, but the front fender is quite unstable using only the given mounting fixtures. The part of the front fender covering the back arc of the wheel is well supported by the fender stays, but nothing secures the section of fender at the top of the wheel from rattling around between my rigid fork when on bumpy terrain. The problem is easily remedied by threading a wire through the holes in the bend of my fork and then through holes in the plastic of the fender, but it would have been nice to have the option of the metal bracket extending perpendicular from the top of the fender to screw into the fork bend that you see in the other fender set model (and in the inaccurate picture shown here).
Also the rubber-strap based mechanism of holding the fender stays to the frame is a bit lame in my opinion. Seems like they could have come up with something cleaner and more durable without giving up versatility--perhaps flexible metal clamps with rubber cushioning and screws to tighten.
All-in-all they are durable and do the job.
This after about 1 1/2 months of use: The tab at the end of the rear fender that attaches to your bike frame (with a zip-tie) broke off at the point where it narrows in from the rest of the plastic fender to become a tab. I repaired the fender by drilling a couple holes above the break-off and affixing a metal bracket to hang down as the tab once had and then attaching that to the frame instead. Indestructible? I think not. But there sure aren't many choices out there for full fenders.

I don't say flimsy to mean that it will break easily, I just mean that since it's mechanism doesn't hold the fender quite as still as I would like it to when riding. It kind of bounces around and can occasionally become dealigned with the tire. I am giving this 4 stars only because it is a good option for such a low price. Had this been a $20 item it would have received 3.

The Zefal Swan Road combines both of these features. It is well designed, well-built, attractive, adjustable, and performs as it should. My only complaint is that it is knocked out of alignment fairly easily, but it also doesn't take much to realign it.

You get that streak of water up the back of your pants and shirt as the spray flies up off the back tire. Not the ideal way to show up for work...or anywhere! What to do?
I got this Zefal fender. It's 3" wide, which fully covers the fat tires on my mountain bike. It's worked like a charm during several light rains so far...blocking the tire spray and keeping my clothes totally dry. Other nice features of the fender include the easy way it attaches to the seat stem with no tools required. It's got a cool twist mechanism you just connect by hand - when its finger-tight and it's good to go. It also has a hinge to adjust the fender up and down, which requires an allen wrench. I keep mine set at one height, so haven't used this feature much, but it's an option. Overall, the fender does everything I need, for a good price. Am totally satisfied with it.

Planet Bike Cascadia Front and Rear Bicycle Fender Set with Mud Flaps Review

(More customer reviews)Just got the 45mm black cascadias for my Giant Cypress hybrid with 700c, 38mm tires last night and installed them easily - they were just wide enough. I had to do some minor re-engineering with my rotory tool because I used a bolt at the chain stay bridge instead of a zip tie as suggested by the instructions. I simply cut the zip tie notch out to the end of the fender so it could slip over a pre-installed bolt. My bike had an existing threaded hole at the bridge to accept the bolt. Beside this, installation was still easy. The polycarbonate is strong but flexible and easy to work with. The stays are very sturdy and the smart hardware set-up allows for easy and quick fine tuning. Got up this morning and noticed the wet roads outside so I couldn't wait to try them - Wow! what a difference! Kept me and my bike clean and dry and they look great!

Update - 22 Dec 08: It finally happened... A stick jumped up and caught the rear fender stays. The fender folded in three places and was tightly stuffed under my rack. I thought it was destroyed but removed the rack, pulled the fender back out, adjusted the stays and was on my way. Three creases are still visible but it did not break and still works as new - I bought a set for my wife's bike! By the way, my black fenders have no "Planet Bike" logo on them but the silver fenders I got for my wife's bike do... on the rear fender only and I think it looks cool. The logo is white and has a shadow effect against the silver coloring inside the polycarbonate.

Update - 16 Dec 09: More of the same... these fenders continue to perform flawlessly. I would not own a bike without these fenders installed.
Update - 8 Mar 2011: Still working great but wanted to say that it looks like the description here has changed. When I bought my 2 sets there was no mention of "ALUMINUM" in this description. It seems that recent buyers are expecting aluminum and not getting it. To clarify what I have - they are 100% polycarbonate with stainless hardware and attachment points - no plastic except maybe the softer mud flaps. Bummer for the reviewer who got plastic attachment points... Yikes... sounds like a big change in quality. Hope this helps and as always - Buyer Beware! The polycarbonate has proved to be of excellent quality on my fenders.

Axiom Rainrunner Trekk Reflex 700c Disc Fender Review

I replaced my stock 35mm tires on a CCM Excelsior hybrid bicycle with Kenda Keen Commuter 700x45 tires. And installed these Axiom Rainrunner Trekk fenders and they fit. The lettering on the side makes my bicycle look more expensive. The front fenders go down very far compared to other fenders I've seen. The flexible mudflap makes this possible otherwise, you'd be hitting the fenders against street curbs when rolling off a sidewalk. The reflective stripes are very wide and bright when you shine a light on them and are a main reason why I got these. I'll admit though that after installing them as close to the frame as possible to have lots of clearance, some of the connecting rods on the side are at their maximum length. I mean there's only like 1mm left (yes, that means they're adjustable with a 10mm wrench). I like the fact these are flexible plastic that you can stretch a little without breaking them. I had some metal ones before that actually broke. And plastic fenders make less noise when they're hit by tiny rocks and won't rust. Since I have rims with an outer width of 24mm, I decided the safest maximum tire size I could probably put on my bike would be 45mm (according to some sites which have rim size/safe tire width charts like Sheldon Brown). So, these fenders were exactly the kind of fit I was looking for. The only other fenders I could find that would allow you to use 45mm tires (or even larger 47mm tires), are the Planet Bike Cascadia 29er and the SKS Bluemels (in 53mm width). Oh, and they don't have to be installed on a bike with disc brakes. The disc brake adapters are not required for installation so they can also go on a bike with V-brakes (linear). A side note on tires: The Michelin City and Continental City tires have NOTHING between 42mm and 47mm. So, the Kenda Keen Commuter 700x45 is the only tire I could find that would be the maximum size you can use. Having larger tires and fenders makes a world of difference when rolling over train tracks and potholes.

When I bought them, I was a little worried that they would flex and rub the tires, but after years of tough use they're still rigid and I've had no rubbing issues. I'm tough on my bike- it's a hybrid/comfort bike and I sometimes take it down stone steps at the park and over roots on dirt trails. (More customer reviews)I have to remove the front fender when putting the bike inside the car, and this one is fast and convenient to put on/take off. The rear fender works better with a rack than on its own. I like how light and simple these are, and am ready to put up with some flimsiness and reduced coverage compared to more heavy-duty fenders. Other reviewers were frustrated by the hardware not fitting their bikes well; it worked OK for my Bianchi Avenue, which does provide the requisite hole in the fork (1 3/4" above the tire).

SKS Hightrek Bicycle Fender Set (26-Inch Wheels) Review

(More customer reviews)Greetings. I ordered these for my Trek mountain bike. Regarding the fenders... as the other reviewer said, they do not fit. Holding them up, I guess they would fit the curve of the wheel, but they are impossible to mount, both the front and the back. The 'clip' is only about as big around as a quarter, very tiny. This may fit a 'road' bike or a fixie, but was nowhere near even clipping on my bike. You wouldn't even be able to force it, it would just break. Also, the front hardware just doesn't work, I have no idea how I would even put it on my bike. I consider myself fairly bright, and the instructions were vague, just 4 tiny pictures of what to do.
My bike is a standard size and shape of mountain bike (26"). At least in the description should be a warning that these are only for 'road' type bikes. This does not fit Mountain bikes OR bikes in the size range listed. On top of that, these aren't actually 'clip' on fenders, they are permanent mount, it 'clips' on permanently.
Regarding Niagara Cycle, they won't refund for a return unless the item is unopened. How would you know if it fit without opening the package, which is really just a bag of screws attached to two fenders that are zip tied together. They were both unfriendly and unwilling to facilitate a refund or exchange for another item. They wanted me to pay for return shipping and also not refund shipping both ways. This total cost would be double what the fenders even cost, meaning if it doesn't fit, you are out of luck.
Bottom line, don't buy these. Poor product, poor description, and poor customer service from Niagara cycle.

Planet Bike Clip-On Front and Rear Bike Fender Set (ATB) Review

(More customer reviews)The fenders seem to be a good fit (size, positioning over wheels), however the mounting hardware included with the fenders assumes the tube sizes are thicker than my bike (2003 Gary Fisher Advance) as using the included bolts and nuts results in the fenders not being tightly adhered to the bike frame, but instead hanging loosely creating an unsafe riding situation. Using some spare bolts and nuts solves the problem.
