(More customer reviews)Among all the saddles that I have, this one is the most uncomfortable by a great margin; in fact, it almost feels defective. This discomfort is not within the normal "like-dislike" range - the saddle is generally unusable. Granted, saddles are subject to very personal preferences, and I wouldn't base so categorical an opinion on my own experience alone; however, several other experienced riders who tried to ride the bike returned with same puzzled look: "there HAS to be something wrong with the saddle...".
The nexus of the problem is somewhere in the midsection, where the saddle narrows very sharply and loses all support - it sort of "hammocks" under you. I might try to inject some foam under the shell, perhaps this helps - I like the look of the saddle a lot, and would like to be able to use it, but right now, it is unusable.

Dia Compe 22 mm Touring Clamp Lever Set Review

(More customer reviews)But my wife gives them five because she likes their look. As a previous reviewer said, these are great if your goal is to preserve or achieve a retro look. If not, spend a few more dollars and get some Tektros instead.
Pros:
- Vintage-esque look
- They work fine
- Inexpensive
Cons:
- No barrel adjuster
- They seem to flex a bit
- The overall quality is so-so
- They would look cheesy on a modern bike
Their biggest weakness in my opinion is the lack of a barrel adjuster. If you don't have an adjuster at the brake or cable hanger, you can't fine-tune your brakes. Of course that's part of the old-school style and neither the product photo nor description imply the presence of one. It's just one of those things you might not think about before buying but that will bother you in usage.
The bottom line: I would recommend them if you're going for a retro look, but not otherwise.

Campagnolo Record 1' Threadless Headset Review

(More customer reviews)I got my Campy Record threadless headset 15 years ago, and it's still going strong today, with the original balls, on a brand new frame. Though the initial price is not cheap, it's worth the money, because once installed and bedded in, it just never needs adjusting. It's as silky smooth as it was brand new. And I weigh over 200 pounds.
This is a traditional-style headset, with balls in keepers running in hardened races. It's a little messy to install, but it's worth the trouble. In contrast, the Shimano Ultegra "cartridge" headset I tried gave up after a year or two. Use a good waterproof grease, pack it in, and clean off the excess when you're finished. Bob's your uncle.
Lightweight, pretty, and durable, just about sums it up.

Brooks Heritage Saddles B17 Standard Aged Saddle - Men's Review

(More customer reviews)The Classic Brooks B17 has a lot going for it. Mine is a Honey colored classic. It took me about 500 miles to break it in. I sped the process up with inundating in a substance I will not describe. I risked ruining the saddle, but the treatment seemed to set it in nicely. Be careful with advice to speed the break-in. You can ruin it. I'm a 165# male, FWIW.
The saddle for me, is very comfortable on the sit bones once it settles in. However, I recently changed my riding position, lowering my handlebar to a more aggressive stance, and I can no longer use it. I was recently 'fitted' by a professional to address other issues I was having on my bike.
Especially on the drops the Brooks caused problems. One one-hour ride and my 'taint, as they say, was screaming. It's a day after my ride and I still feel something a urologist could explain better than I. I've also had urological issues towards the ends of very long rides (60 miles and up) when your form and technique start to degrade.
I gave the saddle 4 stars since it is a classic and is still the last word for long distance riders whose handlebars are pretty much level with the top of the saddle, and who rarely need to use the drop position on their bike.
That said, using heavily padded shorts and bibs may exacerbate the soft tissue problems while improving sit-bone comfort.
Where is my saddle now? It's on my hybrid commuter where I "SIT" on the Brooks in a more upright position. If I had a Trek 520 or LHT, it would still be on my road bike.
It's not for everyone, but if it is for you, you will be one of the many many true believers. Just watch out for the 'taint!
Saddle selection is famously anecdotal. But the Brooks B-17 is certainly worth your time if you're a serious tourer. The saddle holds it's value very well, and even if you don't like it after-all, I doubt you'd sell it. I'm not selling it!

Brooks Saddles B67 Bicycle Saddle (Men's) Review

(More customer reviews)The Brooks B67 (B67S for women) is basically the best saddle available for upright (sit up) riding position. The saddle was created not for a racing position (see the B17 for that) but rather for the straight up position where most of your weight is on your sit bones and your handlewars are typically higher or close to the level of the seat. It does its job exceedingly well and there is no more comfortable saddle available than a broken in Brooks B67 for that type of riding. It would work well with commuter or urban bikes as well as with hybrid or comfort bikes. I would not use one if the seat post itself has a shock absorber though and you do need to consider the handlebar style and position to get the benefit of this saddle (no drop bars for example). If this relaxed riding style/position is what you are after then look no further for a saddle.
